La carrera masculina de 100 metros ha sido parte de todos los programas olímpicos modernos, comenzando con los Juegos de Atenas de 1896. Durante ese tiempo, tres hombres han ganado medallas de oro olímpicas consecutivas de 100 metros: el estadounidense Archie Hahn en 1904 y luego en el Intercalated Juegos de 1906; El estadounidense Carl Lewis en 1984-88; y Usain Bolt de Jamaica, en 2008-12.
Seis hombres han empatado o establecido el récord mundial de 100 metros durante los Juegos Olímpicos. Curiosamente, el primer hombre en hacerlo, el estadounidense Donald Lippincott, no ganó una medalla de oro. En 1912 estableció la primera marca mundial reconocida por la IAAF al ganar una serie preliminar en 10.6 segundos, pero luego tuvo que conformarse con una medalla de bronce en la final.
